In 2010 I endeavored to independently produce an album of music for the world to hear. The journey to this point has been full of ups and downs to say the least. When I started playing the violin at the tender age of 9 years old I doubted before I tried to play a note on the violin that I could make a living playing violin. In spite of that initial doubt, somehow my heart decided: enough! She can follow her most deep seated dream: To share her musical talents with the world.
When I was in High School at Long Beach Polytechnic High School I was so intimidated by all the musicians. I practiced in every spare moment I could get. I knew I need to elevate my level of playing, and it was an amazing blessing when I finally met the ultimate private teacher: Joseph R. Taylor. Mr. Taylor, as I respectfully and affectionately called him until his passing, taught me everything I knew about violin that mattered. Mr. Taylor helped me hold my own.
Now I am writing this blog post less than 60 days from the June 21, 2019 worldwide release of my new electric violin music. It’s a single titled: Elevate. My heart, soul, and mind is so full with so many different emotions. I feel sad that I will not be able to drive over to my teacher’s house and share with him all of the details of my journey. I feel so happy that I finally finished this music and I am ecstatic to have written a song inspired by Jason Hunter of Long Beach, and fellow Long Beach Polytechnic High School alumni. It was our conversations a year ago that birthed this song.
We discussed the purpose of this electric violin music piece. The purpose is to inspire and encourage. We also discussed the sound of the song: A nod to the Long Beach G-Funk sound made famous by none other than Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Nate Dogg, and many more. After we discussed the purpose of the song, I called up my friend and collaborator Los N Music the Producer. I explained to him the concept, and let me tell you the song’s hook melody was written the very first time I ever heard his track. It was an unbelievable moment. I was on the phone with Jason Hunter and I clicked open the email. What I heard knocked me completely out. I LOVED the bass line. I was really inspired. As the track played the very first time I started to sing/hum/articulate the hook’s melody.
When it comes to my creative process it really varies because I have a very deep music theory background from my studies at Poly, MIT, and Oakland University. Give me a melody, an idea, a concept I can make it sing. So when Los N Music sent me the track I was really inspired. One year later, with the rhythm section revised from the original, and strings and lyrics added Elevate has really come to life.
It is my hope that this song touches you as much as it has touched me, and I hope after a year cooking in the lab that it lands with a new flavor in your ear. Truly. Enjoy!
